PHP Compatibility Index

Is WordPress ready for PHP 8.4?

Short answer: mostly yes. We scanned the code of 3,044 WordPress plugins (the most popular ones plus widely used abandoned ones).

The numbers

What changed in PHP 8.4

The change that affects most plugins is the deprecation of implicitly nullable parameters: a parameter written as Foo $x = null must now be written ?Foo $x = null. Old code still runs; PHP only logs a deprecation notice. Many of these notices come from bundled libraries (HTTP clients, SDKs) rather than the plugin's own code.

Deprecation notices do not break a site. They matter because a deprecated feature is usually removed in a later major version, and because sites with WP_DEBUG or display_errors on will show the notices to visitors.

Popular plugins with new PHP 8.4 notices

These still work on 8.4. Keep them updated; most authors fix these notices in routine releases.

Check your site, including premium and custom plugins and your theme, with the free PHP Upgrade Check plugin. It runs inside WordPress and works on any host.

Before you switch to PHP 8.4

  1. Update WordPress, every plugin and your theme.
  2. Check plugins that have not been updated for 2+ years; replace them if they break.
  3. Scan your own site (premium and custom code is not in this index).
  4. Test on a staging copy, then switch PHP in your hosting panel. You can switch back if something goes wrong.
